Seeking video submissions for the showcase production of Made to Dance in Burning Buildings, a new choreopoem by Anya Pearson.
Made to Dance in Burning Buildings is a fusion of poetry, music, and violent and visceral contemporary dance, which poses the question: how do we heal from trauma?
It's about a young black woman who is raped by her boyfriend's friends while he watches; she develops PTSD as a result. Metaphorically, she fractures into five different women who each represent a different facet of her personality (Romance, Despair, Madness, Perseverance, and Missing You). Poetically, these women narrate her journey through PTSD while she, and the men from her real life, explore through dance the trauma and the events leading up to it.
The play will be performed at Joe's Pub at the Public Theater on April 24, 2018. We are casting four actresses and five dancers (one female, four male). We are specifically interested in diverse casting and artists of color.
The styles of dance in the piece are Contemporary, West African, Hip Hop, and Apache (a Parisian street dance). The female dancer should be able to handle all styles and be a strong actress as well. The men must either be strong Contemporary dancers or strong Hip Hop dancers.

A note about process from the director:
Please note this is a super condensed process and we will be doing this showcase off-book. As this is a new work, we will still be in development when rehearsal starts, so there will be script changes as we go. Consequently, fast memorization skills and a comfort with the shifts inherent in devising new work are essential. This is an ensemble piece, so we will be reassigning lines and trying on different parts to find the best voice/point of view for each section. This is a body-centered piece even for the actors. All ages and body-types are desired. Being comfortable moving in your own body is required. And finally, this material is intense so we are looking for artists who are excited about being safe and uncomfortable, vulnerable and witnessed, broken open and vocal for all the women struggling with these and other issues of physical and emotional violence. We are a collaborative room of powerful, diverse women, speaking truth. We can't wait to meet you.
