DESCRIPTION
Currently Casting Non-Union Actors for
Our Own Odyssey, is a new fantastical play that retells Homer’s Odyssey as the journey of a queer youth seeking a new home. Performances mid May, with rehearsals in April and May. There will be a small invited developmental reading April 5th with rehearsal April 3rd. There is a small stipend for each role.
Des (Odysseus)
20s (to play 18)
Latinx
male identifying. cis male, trans masculine, genderqueer male
Des begins the play as a 17 year old kicked out by their family. A young, wide-eyed, just out of the closet kid who begins a journey to find a new home. Grew up in the Bronx, Des lost family and friends when outed. Impressionable but determined. We can easily see through the tough mask they wear at times. Preferably 5’8” or shorter.
Tiresias and other roles
Mid 30s+ (to play many ages including elder)
Open Ethnicity
Any Gender (preference given to Queer and TGNC actors)
Tiresias is a trans elder whose house is a museum of community members past. They offer wisdom and guidance to Des near the end of their journey. The script is written without gendered pronouns, so that in future productions characters can be played by many genders, Tiresias respects the current community and modern identity terms, but refuses to use them to describe themself, claiming to be “older than those terms”. A wise feisty trickster. Due to the convention used of actors playing multiple roles we are flexible on actor’s age, we are open to anyone who appears mid 30’s or older and can capture the heavy spirit of wisdom necessary for the role.
Cy (Cyclops) and other roles
mid 20s- late 30s
Open ethnicity (preference given to Latinx actors)
Male identifying
Cy seems like a kind hospitable stranger. Once Des is in their apartment, that persona starts to drop, and we see the monster within. We are seeking an actor who is physically larger than who we cast for Des in height and/or body mass. Depending on who we cast for Des, that may not be very big. This actor’s other roles include Poseidon, and a drug pushing Lotus Eater.
** Already cast for May performances but possibly seeking an actor for the developmental reading April 5th
**CC (Circe) and other roles
Mid 20s- Early 30s
Latinx
male identifying. cis male, trans masculine, genderqueer male
A bit world weary for their fairly youthful appearance. CC is enamored with Des’ innocence. CC practices a new religion with ancient ties, debatably making them a witch. Attractive, passionate, and subtly seductive, CC’s kiss turns their lovers into (metaphorical) animals. Lives by their own morale code, which includes blunt honesty. Incapable of fully loving the enamored Des back.
Already Cast: Mamá and other roles
