Black female, mid to late 20s, slim to athletic build, attractive but not necessarily beautiful. The actress playing her must have good language and movement skills. Rachel is a minister’s daughter, proper and prim but with a spine. She is torn between her love for the defendant in the play, Bertram Cates, and her belief in her father’s world of fundamentalism. In the course of the play she begins to think for herself.
